Are you familiar with "node-link diagrams"?

Yes

Have you ever used a node-link diagram created by someone else? Under what circumstances?

Yes-I have encountered a few of them on web sites that I have downloaded and used for my own enjoyment and for instructional purposes.

Have you ever created a node-link diagram in order to convey information to others? Under what circumstances?

No

Please describe in your own words what your goals were when you were trying to improve the layout of a diagram.

I was trying to find the starting point in order to figure out the relationships between the nodes so that I could sort and simplify the diagram.

Is there anything you wished you could do when editing graphs, which would have made your job easier? A command or tool that you felt was missing?

Pop-up words or labels would have helped me remember what I was doing (highlighted items, for instance) and how it worked. I was trying to turn some of the diagrams to change its orientation by I didn't know how and wasn't sure if that had been included in my original tutorial/

Are you familiar with "node-link diagrams"?

Yes

Have you ever used a node-link diagram created by someone else? Under what circumstances?

Yes. For the purposes of business analysis and process improvement

Have you ever created a node-link diagram in order to convey information to others? Under what circumstances?

Yes, for colleagues who are involved in the same work as I am.

Please describe in your own words what your goals were when you were trying to improve the layout of a diagram.

Reducing the amount of curvy lines and "noise". Untangling unnecessary intersections. Making it as compact and clean as possible as charts are meant to be "at a glance" to assist with understanding a process, rather than being "attractive" at the expense of complicating understanding. You would also consider boxes and whether or not they were absolutely necessary, much like writing, especially business use the aim is to be clear and concise.

Is there anything you wished you could do when editing graphs, which would have made your job easier? A command or tool that you felt was missing?

Lines that automatically "snapped-to" and readjusted instead of following the original point of connection to the box when moving it around. The ability to colour code and change shape. I did like that whatever line you were adjusting would clearly highlight, this made it easy to see where you were going. A background grid would help with alignment. Would also be helpful to show the example chart as a picture, and then rebuild it on a blank screen, rather than trying to adjust and sort out the existing tangles.

Are you familiar with "node-link diagrams"?

yes

Have you ever used a node-link diagram created by someone else? Under what circumstances?

yes, created by a lecturer to illustrate their thought flow on a complex topic

Have you ever created a node-link diagram in order to convey information to others? Under what circumstances?

yes, to present my research to my supervisors and the general public

Please describe in your own words what your goals were when you were trying to improve the layout of a diagram.

Edges had to be rounded, boxes centered when connected, and an equal distance between the different levels of importance. If an idea box lead to another, it had to be above and if it was equal to then to the side. The final image had to be balanced, not allowing the eye to correct balance while trying to figure out what was connected to what

Is there anything you wished you could do when editing graphs, which would have made your job easier? A command or tool that you felt was missing?

A line straightening tool would have been good. It took a lot of fiddling to get previously sigmoid lines straight. It would also have been great if lines automatically centered on the boxes they were connected to when you changed their location, the ability to offset them later would have been much easier to use function

I draw the diagrams by CellDesigner sometime.
So I think I have some knowledge.

Have you ever used a node-link diagram created by someone else? Under what circumstances?

Yes. To study how to draw the diagram or convert the diagrams to SBML format.

Have you ever created a node-link diagram in order to convey information to others? Under what circumstances?

Yes. I convert KEGG/Reactome pathway to SBML format by CellDesigner.

Please describe in your own words what your goals were when you were trying to improve the layout of a diagram.

I am trying to
- connect one edge from one side of Node as far as possible.
- layout the less connect node on outside in a diagram

Is there anything you wished you could do when editing graphs, which would have made your job easier? A command or tool that you felt was missing?

Are you familiar with "node-link diagrams"?

Yes

Have you ever used a node-link diagram created by someone else? Under what circumstances?

Yes, during undergraduate geology training, for example, to illustrate the rock cycle, the carbon cycle, the water cycle

Have you ever created a node-link diagram in order to convey information to others? Under what circumstances?

Yes, when studying for exams in undergraduate, I would frequently make these kinds of diagrams for revision

Please describe in your own words what your goals were when you were trying to improve the layout of a diagram.

To try to untangle the lines, which were often criss-crossed and difficult to 'read', by moving the boxes into a more logical order.

Is there anything you wished you could do when editing graphs, which would have made your job easier? A command or tool that you felt was missing?

Adding nodules onto the lines would have made things easier. Maybe you could do this and I missed it in the introduction. For instance, if you move a line down and connect it with another line, the nodule disappears, and one line is created. I could not figure out how to get that nodule back.

I guess you are working on the actual usage of the interface here, and not the visual aspects, but definitely it would be great with different shapes and sizes of the boxes. Also, it would be useful to be able to add hyperlinks into the boxes as you add text to it, to create a larger linked file. And to be able to vary the thickness of the lines would be useful to illustrate more important aspects.

But overall I felt it was a great tool, and I would definitely use it for scientific research in volcanology, and it would be excellent for family tree research, and palaeontology/taxomomy.

Are you familiar with "node-link diagrams"?

Yes!

Have you ever used a node-link diagram created by someone else? Under what circumstances?

Yes! Mostly flowcharts in things like lab procedures, i.e. for assessments or lab classes, or for biological theory, but also in Arts contexts i.e. to show the relationships between characters in a play or events in history.

Have you ever created a node-link diagram in order to convey information to others? Under what circumstances?

Yes! Usually in teaching (primary science) to show how ideas are related, i.e. biology as above, in doing my own fiction/play writing, and to talk about complex social situations or arrangements with friends.

Please describe in your own words what your goals were when you were trying to improve the layout of a diagram.

Trying to increase left-to-right or clockwise reading in threads or loops, because that's the way Western readers are taught to read.

Balance situations where two or more options came from one node, i.e. connect each new node on the same plane (not one above, one under, one to the right of, but all to the right on three different levels)

A small amount of aesthetic change, because I think curved corners are nicer than sharp ones.

Is there anything you wished you could do when editing graphs, which would have made your job easier? A command or tool that you felt was missing?

Not a command or tool as such, but some sort of indication about how the nodes were linked would have been useful! i.e. a graph showing a linear or time or stepwise progression through nodes is useful for different concepts than a radial one.

symmetry.

Is there anything you wished you could do when editing graphs, which would have made your job easier? A command or tool that you felt was missing?

Without knowing the actual semantic meaning trying to be conveyed, it was impossible to know whether or not the chart flowed correctly. Bit silly not knowing the starting point. Does one item result in 2 possibilities, or are they a sequence of 3 items? No arrows, so no way to tell. The result is just a bunch of boxes and lines without truly displaying a relationship between them.
A grid background or movable rulers would have helped with symmetry.
